161 years ago today, in 1857 trade unionist Will Thorne, the founder of GMB, was born in Birmingham. Following a meeting at the Canning Town library in London in 1889 Thorne formed the National Union of Gasworkers and General Labourers — now known as the GMB — and helped organise the London Dock Strike the same year to demand an 8-hour day. Today we celebrate the achievements of Thorne and our union, and remind ourselves of the power unions to make change.
